   The middle fork of the South Platte wanders and turns as it makes it way through the grassy flats of South Park.

  I have wanted to get back into my horse drawing for a long time and the other night I did just that. This drawing was done in pencil, Conte crayon and acrylic paint. It is fairly big ( 30 x 40" ) and is ready to be transferred to canvas.

     This was a fairly quick watercolor. Loosely applied and quickly painted, watercolor takes on a life of it's own.

Master-label

  A very kind woman recently remarked that I am a master of watercolor and for that kindness I am  truly thankful. But. I am concerned that the term 'master' carries with it an implication or indictment of finality, that in mastering something there is no longer anything in the medium to be discovered. One of the reasons that watercolor fascinates is the possibility of something new. Bob Ross spoke of  "happy accidents " and that happiness is something I look forward too.

    I was recently asked to speak on Western Art at the University of Colorado. In the course of our discussion I was asked why I am doing these paintings and I was hard-pressed to find an answer. I love the plains of Colorado and Wyoming and am fascinated by the skies we see in the West. But I have come to realize that it's that line that defines the meeting of Sky and Earth that I am most interested in.

     This view of the Taylor River , north of Gunnison, Colorado is a good example of what I am going through right now. My landscapes are starting to be more abstract and largely seem to address the horizon. But I love the way that water, be it in the form of creeks or rivers cuts through the land and the way that trees break up the sky and show light in their leaves. This feels like a learning period and I find that very exciting.

Partially influenced by my love of the plains of Colorado and Wyoming and as I try to simplify my landscapes I find myself drawn to abstraction. These recent works feel more as a journey than an arrival.

The Last Buffalo

It's interesting how some things come about. The buffalo and shadow in this painting were laid in as a rough sketch, my intent being to render them in a more finished manner. This initial painting was so appealing that I decided to leave it and see what would happen. Even though this is not the way I usually work it seems to be good for this painting.

One tends to take for granted that which becomes familiar and I am no exception. Having lived all my life in the West I reckon I look to other places to find beauty. It is especially gratifying then, when people from other regions remark on how beautiful the western United States must be. It is doubly so when I can be a small part of that message.

I have, on occasion painted flowers and this is a favorite. The light is particularly nice on this piece and having not looked at this image for a bit I am reminded how much fun I had painting this.

One Buffalo

This piece was fun and I am quite happy with the results. At a recent show one of the attendees commented that even though the Buffalo is lying down and at rest it looks like he could jump up at any moment. I like when people react to my work.

This painting of the Sacramento Basin was done for Veneco Oil Company in Denver. It measures 4x8' and is an Acrylic on Canvas, the piece has four mounted panels that illustrate the wildlife of this beautiful area. I am very excited to be included in the prestigious Corporate Collections show at Republic Plaza in Downtown Denver.

" Study in Blue "

The Aspen tree is an iconic image in Colorado and these lovely trees are painted over and over. I tried to paint an image of Aspens that honoured the tree but was a bit different from the traditional images.

I've always painted clouds, as part of paintings but seldom as the subject. I've spent a great part of my life looking at clouds. This piece was just to have a little fun and try something different. I like it.
